Abbaye d'Orval

Abbaye d'Orval

There has probably been a brewery at the Abbaye d’Orval ever since the construction of a Benedictine priory at the site in 1070AD. Contemporary evidence from a Franciscan visitor mentions a houblonnière or hop garden .

In 1793 the abbey was destroyed, to be rebuilt some 130 years later. It required significant investment to rebuild the brewery.

The beer we know today is thanks to two Belgians: Honoré Van Sande, and John Vanheulle, who created the special dry-hopped brew.
